Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) ripped into Rep.-elect George Santos (R-N.Y.) over his embellishments and fabrications about his background, asking him point-blank, “Do you have no shame?”
“If I were one of those in New York’s 3rd District right now, now that the election is over, and I’m finding out all of these lies that you’ve told, not just one little lie or one little embellishment — these are blatant lies — my question is, do you have no shame?” Gabbard asked while filling in for Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview with Santos on Tuesday evening. “Do you have no shame? And the people who are now, you’re asking to trust you to go and be their voice for them, their families and their kids in Washington?”
“Tulsi, I can say the same thing about the Democrats,” Santos responded. “Look at Joe Biden. Joe Biden has been lying to the American people for 40 years. He’s the president of the United States. Democrats resoundingly support him. Do they have no shame?”
Gabbard interjected, saying that her question was not about the Democrats.
Santos has emerged from days of silence following reports from The New York Times and other outlets this month that revealed misrepresentations, fabrications and lies about his personal background.
In various interviews with the New York Post and elsewhere this week, Santos has admitted to “embellishing” his resume, including saying that he did not graduate from college and that he did not work directly for financial giants Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
Santos says a poor choice of words led to confusion about his work history, insisting that he did business with both companies and helped make “capital introductions” through “limited partnerships.” He relayed some of that explanation in the interview with Gabbard.
He has also come under fire for representing himself as an “American Jew” and saying that his maternal grandparents fled Europe during World War II, even though reports have emerged that those grandparents were born in Brazil before the war.
Gabbard pressed Santos on those points.
“My heritage is Jewish. I’ve always identified as Jewish. I was raised as a practicing Catholic,” Santos said. “Not being raised a practicing Jew, I’ve always joked with friends and circles, even within the campaign, I’d say, guys, I’m ‘Jew-ish.’ Remember, I was raised Catholic.”
“So, look, I understand everybody wants to nitpick at me. I’m gonna reassure this once and for all. I’m not a facade. I’m not a persona. I have an extensive career that I worked really hard to achieve. And I’m going to deliver from my experience because I remain committed in delivering results for the American people,” Santos said.
Gabbard later ended the interview with sharp words for the 34-year-old incoming congressman.
“Congressman-elect Santos, we’ve given you a lot of time. I think the time that is owed is to the people of New York’s 3rd. It’s hard to imagine how they could possibly trust your explanations when you’re not really even willing to admit the depth of your deception to them,” Gabbard said.
Gabbard is the second former Democratic member of Congress to interview Santos this week. He also spoke with former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), who resigned in 2011 after the revelation of sexually explicit messages he sent to a minor, on WABC radio this week.

Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) is appealing a Maricopa County judge’s decision to dismiss her lawsuit challenging her midterm defeat.
Lake filed a notice of appeal Tuesday in Arizona Superior Court to contest the dismissal of two counts that went to court for a two-day trial as well as other counts that never made it to trial.
The short trial found that she didn’t have enough evidence to back up her claims that local election officials committed intentional misconduct that impacted the race between Lake and Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs (D), which Lake lost by some 17,000 votes.
“I am standing up for the people of this state, the people who were done wrong on Election Day and the millions of people who live outside of Maricopa County, whose vote was watered down by this bogus election in Maricopa County,” Lake said in an appearance on Stephen Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, which she shared to her Twitter feed on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s filing also says Lake will “seek direct review by the Arizona Supreme Court.”
Lake had made it clear after last week’s ruling that she intended to appeal the decision.
“My Election Case provided the world with evidence that proves our elections are run outside of the law. This Judge did not rule in our favor. However, for the sake of restoring faith and honesty in our elections, I will appeal his ruling,” Lake said just before Christmas.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the controversial Trump-era Title 42 border policy to remain in place for the time being.
In a 5-4 vote, the high court reversed an order from a federal judge in Washington, D.C., who ruled last month that the border policy must end.
The court’s ruling comes in response to an emergency request filed by 19 Republican state attorneys general asking to maintain the policy, which was scheduled to expire this week.
Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch joined all of the Supreme Court’s liberal justices in siding against the order allowing Title 42 to stay in effect.
Gorsuch said in a dissenting opinion that “the current border crisis is not a COVID crisis.”
“And courts should not be in the business of perpetuating administrative edicts designed for one emergency only because elected officials have failed to address a different emergency,” he wrote. “We are a court of law, not policymakers of last resort.”
The Supreme Court on Tuesday also set a date for oral arguments in the case for February, with a decision in the case expected for June.
The high court’s stay will remain in effect until a ruling is made, but it does not prevent the Biden administration from ending the policy, although the White House has not signaled it would do so.
Title 42 is a policy first implemented by the Trump administration in the spring of 2020. It allows border officials to deny migrant asylum claims under a public health emergency.
The policy has drawn fierce criticism from immigration activists, who say the policy is cruel and inhumane and no longer relevant as mass pandemic restrictions have been lifted in the U.S.
Republicans and border state officials, however, argue the end of the policy will let in a wave of migrants during a record year for migrant encounters at the border.

Rep.-elect George Santos (R-N.Y.) admitted Monday to fabricating pieces of his work and education history as he campaigned to represent Long Island in the House, including falsely claiming that he’d earned a college degree and that he’d worked directly with Goldman Sachs.
Santos, who professed on the campaign trail that he had Jewish heritage and was “a proud American Jew,” shared Monday that he “never claimed to be Jewish.”
The incoming lawmaker’s inconsistent bio had drawn scrutiny, and his confession prompted backlash from Jewish groups, Democrats and some Republicans.
Santos is set to take office on Jan. 3.
Here’s what we know about George Santos and the discrepancies in his professional profile.
Who is George Santos?

Santos flipped a House seat for the GOP in November to represent parts of Long Island and Queens, helping the party capture a narrow majority in the lower chamber with a seat being vacated by outgoing Rep. Tom Suozzi (D).
The son of Brazilian immigrants, Santos and his Democratic opponent Robert Zimmerman made headlines during their midterm face-off as the first time in U.S. history that two openly gay candidates went head-to-head in a federal general election.
Santos, 34, campaigned with a professional profile that claimed he’d graduated from New York’s Baruch College and worked with top firms Goldman Sachs and Citigroup — and often referred to what he said was a Jewish heritage.
After he was elected to represent Nassau County, a New York Times report highlighted a number of discrepancies in Santos’s CV.
His sexuality has also been called into question after a Daily Beast report suggested that he had been previously married to a woman, from whom he divorced in 2019.
He misrepresented his education, work history

On Monday, Santos broke his silence on the Times’ accusations and admitted in an interview with the New York Post that he’d lied about parts of his background.
Santos admitted he hadn’t gotten a degree from Baruch College or graduated from “any institution of higher learning.”
The incoming lawmaker also said he’d used a “poor choice of words” in saying that he’d worked directly with Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that he had merely done business with both firms through his work at a company called Link Bridge.
The New York Times report also raised questions about Santos’s claims that he’d managed a small, family-based real estate empire. However, none of those claims were corroborated.
“My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry,” Santos told the New York Post in a separate interview.
“I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume. I own up to that … We do stupid things in life,” he said.
Santos on Monday told New York-area radio station WABC-AM that “a lot of people overstate in their resumes, or twist a little bit.”
Santos faces backlash for claims of Jewish heritage

Santos had claimed on the campaign trail that he had Jewish heritage and that his maternal grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium and fled again during World War II. He said his father is Catholic and from Brazil.
The nonprofit Jewish news outlet Forward found that Santos had identified himself in a position paper during the campaign as “a proud American Jew.”
But Santos insisted to the New York Post in his Monday confession that he “never claimed to be Jewish.”
“Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish,’” Santos said.
Since the lawmaker-elect’s confession, Santos has been heavily criticized by the Republican Jewish Coalition, which said he had “deceived” the organization and “misrepresented” his Jewish heritage.
CEO Matt Brooks said he was “disappointed” after the congressman-elect admitted to embellishing key facts about his life in two separate interviews on Monday.
Democratic lawmakers call for Santos to resign

In the wake of Santos’s confession, a number of lawmakers called for the incoming lawmaker to resign from his House seat — or be ousted by Congress if he won’t step down willingly.
“We’ve seen people fudge their resume but this is total fabrication,” Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) wrote on Twitter.
Castro suggested that letting Santos take his seat in the 118th Congress when it convenes in January could set a dangerous precedent for future campaign trails, letting candidates “believe that they can completely fabricate credentials, personal features and accomplishments to win office.”
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Tuesday appealed to Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), asking him to call publicly for Santos’s resignation or schedule a vote to expel him if he doesn’t.
“George Santos knowingly let you spread his lies. @Santos4Congress has embarrassed you and the Republican caucus,” Lieu said.
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) said the House Ethics Committee should probe Santos’s campaign fundraising, saying the “complete fabrication” of his resume could indicate other issues.
Last week, before Santos confessed to the fabrications, incoming House Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) said Santos appears to be an “utter fraud.”
“He appears to be a complete and utter fraud — his whole life story made up. And he’s going to have to answer that question: Did you perpetrate a fraud on the voters of the 3rd Congressional District in New York?” Jeffries told reporters in Washington.
“He’s hiding from legitimate questions that his constituents are asking about his education, about his so-called charity, about his work experience, about his criminal entanglements in Brazil, about every aspect, it appears, of his life,” Jeffries said.
Defeated opponent demands special election

Democrat Zimmerman, who Santos defeated in November, has called for a special election in wake of the controversy.
“George, if that’s even your real name, if you’re so convinced that #NY3 voters still trust you – resign & run against me again in a special election,” Zimmerman wrote Tuesday on Twitter. “Face the voters with your real past & answer questions about your criminal history. Let the voters decide.”
Other Democrats who lost out in the primary earlier this year are calling Santos out for his fabrications and urging him to step down.
Nassau County legislator Josh Lafazan wrote on Twitter that Santos “has now publicly admitted to what we have all known for a week: he’s a liar & a fraud” and “owes us an apology & immediate resignation.
Republicans respond to controversy

Despite direct calls from Democrat lawmakers to take action, McCarthy, who is vying to be the next Speaker of the House, has not commented on the issue.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted in support of Santos on Wednesday with a charged statement sharing unfounded allegations about Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and claims that the COVID-19 vaccines are ineffective.
“The left doesn’t care about lying. The real reason they’re attacking George Santos is that he the first openly gay Republican elected and they hate him for it. I’m glad George is being honest with his district now and look forward to seeing how George legislates & votes,” Greene wrote.
Santos’s lawyer Joseph Murray last week called the New York Times report a “shotgun blast of attacks” and said the coverage indicated Santos had “enemies” at the outlet who were trying to “smear his good name with these defamatory allegations.”
The Hill has reached out to Santos’s legal team for comment.
While national level criticism was more muted, local Republicans have called for action to be taken against Santos.
Nassau County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph Cairo said on Tuesday that Santos “has broken the public trust” by making the false claims.
“He has a lot of work to do to regain the trust of voters and everyone who he represents in Congress,” Cairo said.
Santos’s fellow New York Republican Rep.-elect Nick LaLota on Tuesday called for a the House Ethics Committee to launch a full investigation into the matter, saying he’d “heard from countless Long Islanders how deeply troubled they are” by the Santos revelations.
“New Yorkers deserve the truth and House Republicans deserve an opportunity to govern without this distraction,” LaLota wrote on Twitter.

A fellow first-term Republican elected to Congress from New York in November is calling for a full investigation by the House Ethics Committee of Rep.-elect George Santos (R-N.Y.), after Santos admitted to lying about his background on the campaign trail.
The remarks in a statement issued by Rep.-elect Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.), whose district borders the one that elected Santos, is the latest sign of how the questions about Santos’s background are fueling a storm within the GOP and creating discomfort for fellow Republicans.
“House Republicans like me are eager to be sworn in and focus on our Commitment to America and our respective districts,” LaLota said in the statement. “Yet, over the last few weeks I have heard from countless Long Islanders how deeply troubled they are by the headlines surrounding George Santos.”
“As a Navy man who campaigned on restoring accountability and integrity to our government, I believe a full investigation by the House Ethics Committee and, if necessary, law enforcement, is required,” LaLota added. “New Yorkers deserve the truth and House Republicans deserve an opportunity to govern without this distraction.”
Santos has been under fire ever since a report in The New York Times raised discrepancies in his resume.
On Monday, in several interviews, Santos acknowledged he had not been truthful about his educational and professional background.
Despite previous claims that he attended Baruch College in New York and worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, Santos said in an interview with the New York Post on Monday that he did not attend “any institution of higher learning” and “never worked directly” with either firm.
The incoming congressman’s claims about his Jewish heritage have also come under fire. Santos, who has since clarified that he identifies as Catholic, had claimed during the campaign that his maternal grandparents were Jewish and fled persecution during World War II.
The Republican Jewish Coalition on Tuesday said Santos “deceived” the organization and “misrepresented” his Jewish heritage, adding the incoming lawmaker is no longer welcome at its events.
Matt Brooks, the group’s CEO, said he was “disappointed” in Santos after the congressman-elect admitted to embellishing key facts about his life in two separate interviews on Monday.
Rep.-elect Anthony D’Esposito, another incoming GOP congressman from Long Island, took a more cautious approach toward Santos on Tuesday, noting that “neighbors across Long Island are deeply hurt and rightly offended” by Santos’s misrepresentations and urging him to “pursue a path of honesty.”
“While Santos has taken a required first step by ‘coming clean’ with respect to his education, work experience and other issues, he must continue to pursue a path of honesty,” D’Esposito said in a statement. “I have long held that elected officials must operate in a transparent and truthful manner – it is time for Mr. Santos to embrace that same spirit of sincerity.”

An Arizona judge on Tuesday rejected a request to sanction Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) over her lawsuit challenging her defeat.
Maricopa County and Katie Hobbs (D), in her capacities as both governor-elect and secretary of state, had asked the judge to require Lake and her legal team to pay all parties’ attorneys’ fees, arguing the suit was groundless and made in bad faith.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson in Tuesday’s decision reiterated that Lake did not meet the burden of providing clear and convincing evidence of her claims necessary to win the case, but he said her suit did not meet the standard for imposing sanctions.
“There is no doubt that each side believes firmly in its position with great conviction,” Thompson ruled on Tuesday. “The fact that Plaintiff failed to meet the burden of clear and convincing evidence required … does not equate to a finding that her claims were, or were not, groundless and presented in bad faith. Any legal decision must be based on the law and facts rather than subjective beliefs or partisan opinions, no matter how strongly held.”
Thompson’s ruling, however, does require Lake to reimburse Hobbs $33,040.50 for certain costs incurred during the proceedings in accordance with other state statutes applicable because Lake did not win the case.
Those costs include $28,351 in fees for expert witnesses called by Hobbs and $4,689.50 in compensation paid to Hobbs’s representative who attended ballot inspections prior to trial.
Lake’s campaign has vowed to appeal the judge’s dismissal of the case, standing by the unproven allegations of misconduct and railing against Hobbs’s sanctions push.
Maricopa County and Hobbs had argued Lake and her attorneys should have known that they had no evidence to successfully mount an election challenge, also noting Lake’s refusal to commit to accepting the election results prior to the midterms.
“Courts are established by Arizona’s Constitution and statutes to resolve actual disputes between parties,” the motion stated. “They do not exist so that candidates for political office can attempt to make political statements and fundraise. And they should not be used to harass political opponents and sow completely unfounded doubts about the integrity of elections. All of those things happened in this matter.”
The motion also took aim at a tweet Lake posted accusing the founding partner of Elias Law Group, a firm representing Hobbs as governor-elect, of improperly emailing the judge “what to say” in his dismissal.
There is no evidence to support the allegation, and Lake later deleted the tweet after it was cited in the sanctions request.
“@katiehobbs wants Marc Elias well compensated for helping her destroy free and fair elections in Arizona. This is an attack on our First Amendment & the rule of law. Who will speak out against it?” Lake’s campaign tweeted on Monday evening.

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) on Tuesday said Rep.-elect George Santos (R-N.Y.) “deceived” the organization and “misrepresented” his Jewish heritage, adding the incoming lawmaker is no longer welcome at its events.
CEO Matt Brooks said he was “disappointed” in Santos after the congressman-elect admitted to embellishing key facts about his life in two separate interviews on Monday.
“He deceived us and misrepresented his heritage. In public comments and to us personally he previously claimed to be Jewish,” Brooks said in a statement. “He has begun his tenure in Congress on a very wrong note. He will not be welcome at any future RJC event.”
Santos, who flipped a Long Island House seat for the GOP, admitted in interviews with the New York Post and a local radio station that he fabricated parts of his resume. He told the Post he “never worked directly” for Wall Street firms Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and never graduated from New York’s Baruch College.
“I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume,” he said. “We do stupid things in life.”
Santos had also claimed on his biography website that his maternal grandparents are Jewish and fled persecution during World War II before settling in Brazil.
Several news outlets have raised questions about those claims, citing genealogy records that show his grandparents were born in Brazil before the Nazis rose to power.
Santos told the Post he is “clearly Catholic” and that his grandmother told stories about being Jewish before converting to Catholicism.
“I never claimed to be Jewish,” Santos said. “I am Catholic. Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish.’”
Santos first came under fire for embellishing his resume when The New York Times published an extensive report challenging a number of claims in his resume.
Jewish news outlets then began raising questions about his heritage, leading to an inquiry from the RJC. The organization has hosted Santos at events before, including as a conference speaker and at a Hanukkah celebration this month.
Santos, who is set to take office in January, announced last week he would soon tell his “story” after facing the allegations.
Democrats are now calling for the congressman-elect to resign or be ousted.
The opponent Santos defeated in November, Robert Zimmerman (D), is also challenging him to a special election rematch.

Why Southwest Airlines is canceling so many flights
Southwest Airlines is grappling with a wave of cancellations and delays that are stranding holiday travelers, a situation the CEO says highlights its need to modernize its operation.
While most carriers were plagued by winter storms over the holiday weekend, only Southwest was forced to cancel a majority of its trips, pointing to systemic scheduling issues that have plagued the airline for years.
The airline canceled more than 2,500 flights on Tuesday, according to data from flight tracking website FlightAware, accounting for most of the 2,900 cancellations in the U.S. that day.

That comes after Southwest canceled more than 2,900 flights on Monday — a whopping 71 percent of its flights — while other airlines emerged relatively unscathed.
Things may only get worse from here for Southwest customers. The airline said Monday that it would operate just one-third of planned flights “for the next several days” in order to salvage its schedule.
What happened at Southwest?
Southwest says it was uniquely affected by winter storms that slammed airports in Chicago and Denver, two of Southwest’s largest hubs. The airline did not have the capacity to reschedule thousands of flights that were derailed.

“We were fully staffed and prepared for the approaching holiday weekend when the severe weather swept across the continent. … These operational conditions forced daily changes to our flight schedule at a volume and magnitude that still has the tools our teams use to recover the airline operating at capacity,” Southwest said in a statement.

Others, meanwhile, said that the airline overbooked its holiday schedule and didn’t have the workforce available to rebook flights in the event of weather disruptions.
Southwest workers have long complained that the airline has failed to modernize its decades-old communications systems, raising the likelihood of meltdowns when things go wrong.
Southwest CEO Bob Jordan acknowledged those issues in an internal message to employees Sunday.

“Part of what we’re suffering [from] is a lack of tools. We’ve talked an awful lot about modernizing the operation, and the need to do that. And crew scheduling is one of the places that we need to invest in. We need to be able to produce solutions faster,” he said.
TWU Local 550, which represents flight dispatchers and meteorologists, wrote on Twitter Monday evening that the situation is “untenable and is a direct result of the lack of investment and foresight by Southwest Airlines leadership.”
“The lack of vision for the future, long-needed overhauls of technology, and limited changes to the network are all compounding each other,” the union added. “‘Sorry’ is not enough this time. Action must be taken and Southwest Airlines must be held accountable.”
Southwest uses a point-to-point system that relies less on central hubs and allows for more direct flights between faraway locations. The downside is that when flights are canceled, pilots and other workers struggle to reach their next flight, causing further disruptions.
Helane Becker, an airline analyst at Cowen, said in a Tuesday note that Southwest “had an extraordinary number of employees calling in sick,” which contributed to staffing issues, particularly at its Denver hub. The U.S. is struggling with a surge of viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) tweeted Monday night that it is monitoring widespread complaints from customers. Many have reported being unable to rebook flights or find their luggage.
“USDOT is concerned by Southwest’s unacceptable rate of cancellations and delays & reports of lack of prompt customer service. The Department will examine whether cancellations were controllable and if Southwest is complying with its customer service plan,” the department wrote on Twitter.

Defeated New York congressional candidate Robert Zimmerman (D) on Tuesday called on his former opponent, Rep.-elect George Santos (R), to resign and run in a new election after Santos admitted to lying about his professional and educational background.
Santos in an interview with the New York Post acknowledged discrepancies in his background, which were previously reported by The New York Times, but Santos contended he would serve out his term, arguing that he campaigned “talking about the people’s concerns, not my resume.”
“George, if that’s even your real name, if you’re so convinced that #NY3 voters still trust you – resign & run against me again in a special election,” Zimmerman wrote on Twitter. “Face the voters with your real past & answer questions about your criminal history. Let the voters decide.”
Santos flipped the Long Island district last month after Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) opted to campaign for the state’s governorship rather than run for reelection. Santos won by 8 percentage points.
The Republican’s victory was one of multiple key GOP wins in New York congressional districts in the midterms, helping the party to secure a narrow House majority in the upcoming Congress.
But after the election, The New York Times published a report earlier this month detailing various discrepancies in Santos’s purported background, including Santos’s false claims that he worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that he’d graduated from New York’s Baruch College.
“My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry,” Santos told the New York Post in an interview on Monday.
The Hill has reached out to Santos’s attorney for comment. Santos is set to take office on Jan. 3.
Zimmerman’s demand adds to a chorus of Democrats who have called for Santos to resign his newly won seat.
House Minority Leader-elect Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said last week that Santos “appears to be a complete and utter fraud.”
