Republican Mayra Flores flips House seat in Texas special election
Republican Mayra Flores on Tuesday was projected to defeat Dan Sanchez (D) in the special election for Texas’ 34th Congressional District, a traditional Democratic stronghold. The Associated Press called the race at 11:13 p.m. ET. The seat was made vacant in March when former Democratic Rep. Filemón Vela resigned. Flores will head to Washington to serve out the remainder of Vela’s term. She will face Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), who currently represents the 15th Congressional District, for a redrawn 34th Congressional District in November.
