Biden: Nichelle Nichols 'redefined what is possible for Black Americans and women'

President Biden on Sunday paid tribute to Nichelle Nichols, the first Black woman to act in a major role on a primetime television show, who died Saturday at the age of 89.

“In Nichelle Nichols, our nation has lost a trailblazer of stage and screen who redefined what is possible for Black Americans and women,” Biden said of the late “Star Trek” actor in a statement issued by the White House.

He noted that through her role as Lt. Uhura, Nichols helped to break down barriers for Black women, especially in entertainment and science.

“With a defining dignity and authority, she helped tell a central story that reimagined scientific pursuits and discoveries, Biden said.

He added, “And she continued this legacy by going on to work with NASA to empower generations of Americans from every background to reach for the stars and beyond.”

The president was one of many who shared their devastation over the loss of Nichols, whose death in New Mexico was announced Sunday by her son.

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Rep. Val Demings (D-Fl.) also shared tributes to Nichols.

“Her kindness and bravery lit the path for many,” wrote Abrams. “May she forever dwell among the stars.”

Publisher of Tim Scott memoir acknowledges error over line about White House bid

The publisher of a new memoir from U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has acknowledged that editors erroneously slipped into the book’s copyright page two sentences that claimed Scott was seeking a presidential bid in 2024.

Thomas Nelson, a subsidiary of publishing giant HarperCollins, said in a statement to the Post and Courier that editors made the error entirely on their own, without any involvement from Scott.

“The description on the copyright page was our error and is not accurate. It was not done at the direction or approval of the Senator or his team. We are working to correct this immediately,” the statement to the news outlet reads.

It’s unclear how they might correct it. Scott’s memoir, “America, a Redemption Story,” is set for publication on Aug. 9.

According to the Post and Courier, the small print on the copyright page says: “Senator Scott is a rising star who sees and understands the importance of bipartisanship to move America forward. This book is a political memoir that includes his core messages as he prepares to make a presidential bid in 2022.”

Scott had already told the Post and Courier he did not sign off on those two sentences. When asked about the veracity of the claims on his presidential ambitions, Scott refuted them and said it was “fascinating” they were included in the book.

According to a brief synopsis of the book on Amazon, the memoir recounts “the formative events of his life alongside the inspiring stories of other Americans who have risen above hardship and embodied the values that make our nation great.”

Scott, who has served as the junior senator in South Carolina since 2013, has written two other books with former South Carolina GOP congressman Trey Gowdy.

He has often been the subject of speculation about a White House bid, but has never publicly stated such ambitions.

CNN's Zakaria calls Alito's speech mocking foreign leaders 'disgusting,' 'scandalous'

CNN host Fareed Zakaria on Sunday slammed Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for what he called a “disgusting” and “scandalous” speech last week criticizing foreign leaders who disagreed with his ruling on Roe V. Wade.

Zakaria told Jim Acosta on CNN that Supreme Court justices are supposed to, at the very least, conduct themselves in a way that is above politics, given they are unelected members with life tenure who can decide crucial decisions shaping the lives of millions of Americans.

“The reason they have that legitimacy is, to put it very simply, that they behave themselves, that they behave in accordance with the kind of dignity and majesty of the court,” said Zakaria, who hosts CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.”

“What Alito did, behaving like a cheap commentator, and not a particularly good one at that, was frankly disgusting. I mean I thought it was the most undignified performance by a Supreme Court justice that I have seen in my lifetime,” he said. “I don’t think any of his predecessors would have done it. I think it’s scandalous.”

Zakaria added that he did not expect formal punishment, but added: “If John Roberts wants to fulfill his role as chief justice, I think he should call Justice Alito in and try to explain to him why it damages not just Alito — who looks like an idiot — but it damages the court.”

During a speech at Notre Dame Law School’s Religious Liberty Summit in Rome, Alito mocked British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Prince Harry. He also mentioned Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.

All four leaders had sharply criticized the Supreme Court for overturning the nearly 50-year constitutional right to abortion, which Alito seemed to find amusing.

“I’ve had a few second thoughts over the last few weeks since I had the honor this term of writing I think the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders who felt perfectly fine commenting on American law,”  Alito said during his speech.

The Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe V. Wade has paved the way for many GOP-led states to ban or severely restrict abortion access across the country, despite around two-thirds of Americans supporting the right to an abortion in some cases.

Trust in the Supreme Court has never been lower, according to polling earlier this month, which found just a quarter of Americans hold confidence in the high court.

Trump apologized to Cruz for campaign insults, Manafort says in new book

Former President Trump apologized to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) after he insulted the lawmaker’s wife and father on the campaign trail as they both vied for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, according to a new book from Trump’s onetime campaign manager Paul Manfort.

The Guardian, which obtained a copy of the book, reports that Manafort wrote that Trump, who rarely apologizes for slights, told Cruz he was sorry for calling his wife ugly and for falsely linking his father to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

During a face-to-face meeting with Cruz in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2016, Trump told the senator “he considered him an ally, not an enemy, and that he believed they could work together when Trump was president,” according to Manafort’s book, “Political Prisoner: Persecuted, Prosecuted, but Not Silenced,” set to be released next month.

Manafort’s anecdote appears to contradict comments from Cruz, who said Trump never offered an apology to him during an interview in September 2016, after he endorsed Trump’s run.

”Heidi and my dad and I, we talked about it and we made a decision together — that we are going to choose to forgive him,” Cruz told The Texas Tribune.

Manafort, who served as Trump’s campaign manager from March to August 2016, was convicted on eight separate charges as part of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump pardoned Manafort before he left office.

In his new tell-all book, Manafort rails against the U.S. justice system, denies the Trump campaign colluded with Russia and says he advised Trump while in home confinement during the 2020 election, according to The Guardian.

On the 2016 campaign trail, Trump also questioned whether Cruz was born in Canada and even gave him one of his infamous nicknames: Lyin’ Ted.

Cruz did not immediately endorse Trump after the apology, which was given ahead of a convention the senator was going to speak at.

When Cruz did not endorse him at the convention, Trump said “This is bulls—” before walking off the stage, taking attention away from Cruz, Manafort writes.

But the pair would become close allies during Trump’s presidency.

Manafort also claims that Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen spied on the campaign, according to Vox, which also obtained a copy of the book.

Cohen, who in 2018 was sentenced to three years in prison for tax fraud and false testimony, denied the spying allegations to Vox. Manafort alleges Cohen had full access to 2016 Trump campaign servers and emails and was responsible for leaks to the press.

Demings, Abrams mourn 'trailblazing' Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Rep. Val Demings (D-Fl.) took to Twitter Sunday to celebrate the life of “Star Trek” actress Nichelle Nichols, who died on Saturday.

Nichols passed away at the age of 89 in Silver City, New Mexico, said her son, Kyle Johnson.

“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page. “Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Nichols was remembered by many, including Abrams and Demmings, as a trailblazer for Black women. Her role as communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series broke many barriers for Black female actors, including her boundary-pushing on-screen interracial kiss with William Shatner.

Demings honored Nichols as an actress “who helped inspire generations of actors and astronauts alike,” in a tweet after learning of her death.

Her tribute included one of her previous tweets, in which she hailed Nichols for inspiring diversity in media.

Abrams echoed a similar sentiment in her tweet, which included a photo of the two smiling together.

“One of my most treasured photos – Godspeed to Nichelle Nichols, champion, warrior and tremendous actor. Her kindness and bravery lit the path for many. May she forever dwell among the stars.”

Abrams, a die-hard “Star Trek” fan, recently made a cameo on the season 4 finale of “Star Trek: Discovery.”

The future of US high-tech is not CHIPS-Plus, it’s international students

As Congress attempts to stave off Chinese competition in computer chip manufacturing, investing billions to subsidize its domestic semiconductor industry will miss the mark if the U.S. does not do more to attract and retain international students.

The so-called CHIPS-Plus legislation leaves untouched the very real barriers to recruiting the human capital needed to fuel the U.S. semiconductor industry, and all STEM fields for that matter.

The battle for dominance in high-tech research begins in the classroom and right now China is outcompeting the U.S. in this arena. China produces four times as many bachelor’s students and two times as many graduate and Ph.D. students in STEM than the United States each year.

To succeed in the high-tech arms race, we must both increase U.S. homegrown talent and attract the world’s best and brightest talent to our higher education institutions. Our antiquated immigration system coupled with onerous requirements to study or work here works against our efforts to excel at the latter.

The U.S. currently draws about a million international students to this country every year, but the hurdles they must face to even set foot on a U.S. campus are significant. The ones blocking their ability to stay after graduation to work, conduct research, or start a business are even greater.

It is in the U.S.’ best interest to resolve these issues. International students on U.S. campuses have, for generations, advanced U.S. foreign policy, diplomacy, and homeland security goals while also enriching the worldview of their domestic classmates and making important contributions to the local community and economy—to the tune of almost $25 billion during the 2020-2021 school year. Since 2000, more than half of all U.S. unicorns—start-ups valued at $1 billion or more—have been founded or co-founded by immigrants. Consider that the co-founder of Moderna, Noubar Afeyan, began his career as an international student in the United States. Further, research indicates that an additional 100,000 international student graduates of U.S. colleges and universities each year would like to stay and work permanently in the U.S. They could add up to $233 billion to the U.S. economy this decade and reduce STEM-related talent shortages by about a quarter.

Meanwhile, our competitor countries, namely the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, are forging ahead with welcoming policies to recruit and retain the world’s global talent. The U.K., for example, reached its goal of hosting 600,000 international students by the year 2030 a full decade early by creating more post-study work opportunities and ensuring immigration policies are welcoming to global research talent. Similarly, Canada surpassed its milestone of attracting 450,000 international students three years early by adopting expedited visa processing for certain qualifying students, offering post-study work visas that can last up to three years, and making it easier for international students to immigrate.

The U.S., in contrast, does not have a national, coordinated government strategy for international education. The total number of new international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities is on a downward trend, while the other countries named above are experiencing double-digit growth in international student enrollment. It is estimated that the U.S. share of the international student market has dropped by eight percent since 2001.

The cost of inaction is high. As the departments of State and Education affirmed in a Joint Statement of Principles in Support of International Education issued one year ago, “this competition represents a direct challenge to U.S. leadership in research and innovation, our ability to tackle common global concerns, and our capacity to effectively champion universal values, such as human rights, the rule of law, and equity and tolerance, on a global stage.”

We couldn’t agree more.

With the efforts to pass a comprehensive U.S. competitiveness and innovation legislative package falling short, the time is now for the United States government to leverage the vast potential of international education to fully assert its global competitiveness.

The U.S. should adopt a national strategy for international education that establishes targets, policies, and funds programs to increase the number and diversity of international students at U.S. higher education institutions; increase the number and diversity of American students participating in study abroad programs; and promote efforts to internationalize U.S. campuses. Because international education policy falls under the jurisdiction of more than one federal agency, a coordinating body should be established within the White House that would ensure collaboration and compromise within and across key federal agencies.

Second, U.S. visa and immigration law and policy must be updated and modified to provide the predictability that is essential to attracting and retaining international students. This includes allowing international student visa applicants to express interest in remaining in the United States after graduation, updating immigration law to permit smoother access to work opportunities for skilled post-graduates from STEM fields and non-STEM fields alike, and improving the visa application process.

These and other key adjustments could make the difference between the U.S. workforce being left behind, or leading the pack.

Putin pledges to expand Russia's naval power, citing US as top threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a naval doctrine on Sunday that accused the United States of seeking to dominate the world’s oceans and extends Moscow’s own ambitions into the Arctic Ocean.

Putin inked the document shortly before delivering a patriotic speech on Navy Day urging Russia to defend its national security interests, according to Reuters.

The 55-page naval doctrine says Russia will aim to become a “great maritime navy” with a presence across the world to counter the “strategic policy of the USA to dominate the world’s oceans.”

“Guided by this doctrine, the Russian Federation will firmly and resolutely defend its national interests in the world’s oceans, and having sufficient maritime power will guarantee their security and protection,” the doctrine reads, per Reuters.

It also says Russia will expand its ambitions in the Arctic Ocean. The U.S. has previously warned Russia and China against aggression in the Arctic region.

Speaking at the city St. Petersburg off the Neva River later in the day, Putin said Russia will “defend our interests” in claimed territories.

“We need to take resolute action today, given the challenges we’re facing,” the Russian leader said. “The homeland for everyone is a sacred concept. We need to defend it.”

As Putin finished, he earned a large “hoo-rah” from the naval sailors and officers who gathered for Navy Day, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of July.

Putin did not mention the war in Ukraine, but he pledged to defend Russian naval power in the Black and Azov Seas.

“We need to rely on our capabilities, and anyone who would like to endanger our sovereignty will get a strong response,” Putin said.

The Russian president ordered an invasion of Ukraine in late February, in part because he feared Ukraine would join the western security alliance NATO.

With the U.S. spending billions to arm Ukraine, tensions between Moscow and Washington are higher than at any point since the Cold War.

However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday held their first call since the war began, to discuss a possible prisoner swap.

Hogan slams 'disgusting lies' about 9/11 by Maryland GOP attorney general nominee

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) condemned his party’s pick for state attorney general on Sunday, following a CNN report revealing the nominee spread conspiracy theories about the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on a radio show he co-hosted roughly 15 years ago.

Michael Peroutka, who won the Republican primary earlier this month, said it was “very, very true” that demolition charges were present in the World Trade Center before the attacks, during an October 2006 episode of “The American View.” He also questioned if an “elite bureaucrat” may have charges in every building in the city.

“We know who was responsible for 9/11,” Hogan tweeted Sunday. “Blaming our country for Al-Qaeda’s atrocities is an insult to the memory of the thousands of innocent Americans and brave first responders who died that day. These disgusting lies don’t belong in our party.”

Hogan, who is in his second and final term as Republican governor of a traditionally blue state, has repeatedly criticized members of his own party, including former President Trump.

After Trump-backed candidate Dan Cox won Maryland’s GOP gubernatorial primary, Hogan said he wouldn’t support his party’s nominee in the general election. Hogan previously called Cox a “QAnon conspiracy theorist.”

Peroutka, who is endorsed by Cox, suggested during the 2006 radio episode the Twin Towers fell as a result of controlled explosives, CNN reported.

“I’ve been doing some reading and doing some studying, and I believe that to be very, very true,” Peroutka said, according to the outlet. 

“And I said that if the buildings in New York City, the World Trade Center buildings, came down by demolition charges – that is to say – if there was this evidence that there was that something was preset there, then the implications of that are massive,” he continued.

The Hill has reached out to the Peroutka campaign for comment.

CNN reported that Peroutka on the show also suggested that Building Seven, which was part of the World Trade Center complex and located close by to the Twin Towers, fell as a result of a controlled demolition and claimed the building fell faster than the speed of gravity.

“That begs the question that if there are preset charges in Building Seven, what’s to stop there for being preset charges in Buildings 1, 2 8, 9, and 27?” Peroutka said. 

“Are there charges in every building in New York City? Is everyone ready to be brought down whenever some elite bureaucrat decides that he’s gonna pull it?” Peroutka added.

Webb telescope shows the humility of our cosmic roots

The universe had been expanding for 13.8 billion years, but in the first few minutes, it was hotter and denser than the core of the sun. We know it from the observed abundances of light elements, such as deuterium, helium and lithium, that were cooked out of a soup of protons, neutrons and electrons at these early moments. Stars could not have existed so early because the extreme heat would have dispersed them.

When did the first stars form?

The scientific details of “Let there be light” are at the focus of NASA’s  James Webb Space Telescope. I was fortunate to take part in the first scientific advisory board that designed this telescope with the primary motivation of imaging the first stars and galaxies. The telescope was built to capture the infrared wavelengths of starlight that was stretched by a redshift factor of 10 to 20 as a result of the cosmic expansion, extending our view to the infant universe. This enabled the “deep image” of the cosmos that was released in a dedicated White House event, hosted by President Biden and Vice President Harris on July 11, 2022. The image shows numerous red arcs around a cluster of galaxies. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson noted, “Mr. President, we’re looking back more than 13 billion years,” an uncommon statement in D.C., where plans are made on four-year timescales. The image resulted from a long Webb exposure for half a day, but future exposures could last weeks, probing fainter galaxies at greater distances. By now, half a dozen newspapers reported about galaxies with possible redshifts as high as 16 in Webb’s data.

When did the first stars and galaxies form?

Based on the standard cosmological model, we expect the very first stars to have emerged about 100 million years after the Big Bang. They formed inside small gas clouds, a millionth the mass of the Milky-Way galaxy, which condensed from seed inhomogeneities in the early universe. (The subject of an undergraduate-level book I wrote in 2010, followed by an advanced textbook two years later.)

Thanks to the finite speed of light, we can observe how the universe appeared at early times by looking far away. The first image we have of the universe, shows the imprint of the initial density perturbations that seeded the first galaxies. The image shows slight brightness fluctuations, at a level of one part in a hundred thousand, in the cosmic microwave background. This first snapshot is from 400,000 years after the Big Bang, when the universe cooled below a few thousand degrees, so that free electrons and protons were cold enough to make hydrogen atoms. Scattering by the fog of free electrons made the universe opaque to light at earlier times.

Then 100 million years later, dense regions condensed as a result of their self-gravity, which reversed their initial expansion and collapsed them into the first dwarf galaxies. From our vantage point, these first galaxies are challenging to observe, not only because of their great distance from us but also because they are fainter sources of light than present-day galaxies like the Milky Way.

The earliest galaxies were composed of dark matter and a primordial abundance of mostly hydrogen and helium but almost no heavy elements. Under these circumstances, the gas was unable to cool efficiently and so it fragmented into stars that are tens to hundreds of times more massive than our sun. The most massive stars had a surface temperature of order 100,000 degrees, emitting copious amounts of ultraviolet radiation that broke surrounding cosmic hydrogen into its constituent electrons and protons. This process, called “reionization,” restored the cosmic hydrogen back to the ionized state that characterized it in the first 400,000 years after the Big Bang. But because the universe expanded by a factor of about a hundred since that time, it was 1 million times more rarefied and hence transparent. Hence, the Webb telescope can look through it to observe the first stars.

During the epoch of reionization, bubbles of ionized hydrogen grew around concentrations of galaxies and eventually overlapped within a billion years to fill the entire cosmic volume. We can map the growth of these bubbles using the faint transition of cosmic hydrogen in radio waves with a wavelength of 21-centimeter. Several low-frequency observatories are currently searching for the “Swiss Cheese” structure of the redshifted 21-cm radiation. Since additional stars and black holes formed over time, the intergalactic hydrogen remained ionized until the present time.

Our physical roots started with the first stars, but our biological roots started with the first heavy elements produced in the interiors of these stars. “Life as we know it” requires the building blocks of carbon and oxygen, which the early universe did not provide before it cooled below the required fusion temperature.

When did the first life form?

Life could have started as soon as the second generation of stars formed out of the ashes left from the first stars. (The habitable universe is the subject of a review paper I wrote 2014 and my latest textbook.)

The cores of the massive early stars were so hot that they produced electron-positron pairs once they consumed their nuclear fuel, and then exploded as powerful “pair-instability supernovae” — the only explosions that were fully understood from first principles for nearly six decades. The explosions spewed heavy elements from stellar guts into interstellar space. First life could have blossomed on the surface of planets that formed out of these heavy elements, less than 1 billion years after the Big Bang.

If sentient beings existed back then, they would have marveled at bright stars appearing and exploding like cosmic fireworks, in celebration of the birth of life in the young cosmos. The sun was late to the party, forming 8 billion to 9 billion years later. And out of the debris left over from the formation of the sun, condensed a rock we now call Earth, on which a group of people built the Webb telescope that could seek evidence for what happened before.

We must never forget that the cosmic play started long before we came on stage. This suggests humility. The cosmic play is not about us.

Northern California's McKinney wildfire grows to 51K acres

The McKinney wildfire has blazed through more than 51,000 acres across northern California, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents and prompting an emergency in one county.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported 51,468 acres have been burned with zero percent of the conflagration contained as of Sunday.

The wildfire is spreading in Siskiyou County, the northernmost county in the state hugging Oregon and home to Klamath National Forest, where much of the fire is burning.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) declared an emergency Saturday in Siskiyou County as the McKinney Fire evolved into the largest wildfire in California this year, sending ash into the stratosphere.

Newsom said the McKinney Fire, which began on Friday, was “intensified and spread by dry fuels, extreme drought conditions, high temperatures, winds and lightning storms.”

The wildfire has destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of nearly 2,000 residents.

It also merged with two other fires over the weekend, the China 2 and Evans fires, which prompted the evacuation of an additional 200 residents.

The region remains in a red flag warning on Sunday with the potential that dry lightning and strong winds could exacerbate the inferno, according to the National Park Service.

California is already battling the Oak Fire, which has consumed nearly 20,000 acres of land in Mariposa County and is about 64 percent contained as of Sunday.
